Standard 2 Teachers know how children grow. The teacher understands how children with broad ranges of ability learn and provides instruction that supports their intellectual, social, and personal development.
Rationale 1: There are several elective courses at the high school that pertain to technology. Some students choose to take these courses and some do not. When integrating digital devices into my Sophomore English classes, I try to choose strategies that cater to many different learning styles and abilities. Making digital collages on pixlr.com allows students to share their literature circle books with the entire class. The students who have more experience with photo editing skills can work on independently, while the students who are new to pixlr.com can use the basic devices I present and still produce beautiful end products.
KSD: 2.K.3 The teacher is aware of expected developmental progressions and ranges of individual variation within each domain (physical, social, emotional, moral, and cognitive), can identify levels of readiness in learning, and understands how development in any one domain may affect performance in others. When integrating technology into my curriculum, I have to keep in mind that my students come to me with a large variety of digital experiences. Using a photo editor to produce Literature Circle projects is a great way to allow the students to work on their collages at their own paces. I was available to the students who needed more guidance with the program, while the more experienced students could work independently and try a few devices in the program that were not presented in class.
2.S.1 The teacher assesses individual and group performance in order to design instruction that meets learners’ current needs in each domain (cognitive, social, emotional, moral, and physical) and that leads to the next level of development. Using the rubric for this evidence allows me to assess my students’ performances and the overall success of the project.
2.D.2 The teacher is disposed to use students’ strengths as a basis for growth, and their errors as an opportunity for learning. For the duration of this project, I am able to document any issues that students have while working with pixlr.com. This documentation allows me to assess my students’ needs for this lesson in the future.
